What Is Color/Light + How It Is Connected To Herbs

Color is part of the electromagnetic  spectrum, which includes all types of light. Color is an effect produced by the eye and its nerves due to the light waves of different wavelengths or frequencies. Light is a form of energy that travels in electromagnetic waves. Light is produced by various sources including the sun + light bulbs + electronic displays. Light being transmitted from an object to the eye stimulates the different color cones of the retina. This makes the eye view many colors of the object. Visible light ranges from 300 - 700 nanometers. 300 nanometers is ultraviolet light (UV). UV light has a shorter wavelength than visible light. It is often described as beyond violet. 700 nanometers is red light.

The Wavelength

Wavelengths are direct frequencies in a wave form. Frequency is the number of waves that pass a time period which is expressed in hertz (Hz). Longer wavelengths will have lower frequencies + shorter wavelengths will have higher frequencies. To the human eye, wavelength is connected to the perception of color. Which is the visible spectrum. Reds are longer wavelengths + yellows/greens are intermediate + blues/violets are shorter wavelengths.

Wavelength Nanometers: a billionth of a meter = 0.000000001

The human eye + brain together translate light into color. The retina has two different types of cells that detect & respond to light which are rods + cones. These are also called photoreceptors which specialize in light detecting cells on the retinas at the back of your eyes which then sends signals to the brain for visual processing. These cells are connected to the nervous system which are neurons. Neurons are cells that transmit signals through the body, enabling us to think + feel + act. Rods perceive black + white, enabling night vision. Cones perceive color, which provide central vision = ability to see what is directly in front of you + surrounding you. Reflected light enters the human eye first through the cornea (the outermost part of the eye). The cornea bends light toward the pupil, which controls the amount of light that hits the lens. The lens then focuses the light on the retina which is the layer nerve cells in the back of the eye. Cones contain photopigments. Humans usually have three types.

༺♥༻ Sunlight-Composed of Visible Colors: Red + Orange + Yellow + Green + Blue + Indigo + Violet

This mixture is known to be white light. When white light strikes a white object, it appears to be “no color” because it absorbs no color + reflects all color equally. When it strikes a colored object, this color light is reflected back. A black object absorbs color equally + doesn’t reflect, so  it looks black to the human eye.

Tertiary Colors: In-between Colors

These colors are the extension of the primary colors + secondary colors together.

  • Yellow + Orange = Yellow-Orange
  • Red + Orange = Red-Orange
  • Red + Purple = Red-Purple
  • Blue + Purple = Blue-Purple
  • Blue + Green = Blue-Green
